Throughout her career, Bette Midler has been known for her sassy repartee off camera and her dramatic and comedic acting chops on the small and silver screens. But it’s her stage persona, as the Divine Miss M, that she is best known for. Her live concert shows rely heavily on an array of designer dresses — from classic Emilio Pucci garments to spectacular costumes by Bob Macki, including her iconic Delores Delago mermaid costume and the sailor costume that was part of her concert between 2003 and 2005.
Midler is planning to auction off these collectibles as well as stage sets, art work, jewelry and other personal items, such as the Valentino special occasion dress she wore to the Academy Awards in 1992, the year she received a Best Actress nomination for her performance in For the Boys. Midler admits the dress holds a special place in her fashion heart, calling it one of the most beautiful dresses she has ever owned.
“I was so happy to be going to the Academy Awards for a picture that my production company produced. I didn’t win, but I felt so wonderful in this dress. Mr. Valentino has been a friend for many years, and every time I see him I thank him again,” she said of the dress.
The sale is being organized by Julien’s Auction in Beverly Hills and is scheduled to take place November 12. Proceeds will be donated to the New York Restoration Project, a non-profit charity Midler founded in 1995. The organization is dedicated to maintaining parks and community gardens throughout New York City.
